Poets from France, Spain,  Kenya, USA, Haiti, Cuba, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago and many Latin American countries all came together recently for a successful international poetry festival in Caracas, Venezuela. The Festival took place at the Teresa Carreño Theater and the Centre of Latin America Studies Rómulo Gallegos (CELARG).

Trinidad and Tobago was represented by former Poet Laureate of Port of Spain Eintou Pearl Springer. Eintou was formally invited by the Casa Nacional de las Letras Andrés Bello to attend, and she was privileged to be able to perform her poetry for a variety of audiences including students.

Poets had the opportunity to perform in Caracas' beautiful, modern and fantastically equipped theatres, as well as meet and interact with
community poets and schools. For Eintou there was the additional joy of dancing to the joropos and gaitas, well known in the parang of Trinidad and Tobago.

Eintou says that it was also a special privilege to perform in the land from which her maternal grandfather Juan Guerra had come from, the Sucre province.

The Venezuelans were excellent hosts, proving guides, liaison officers and translators. Special thanks must also go to the staff of the Trinidad and Tobago Embassy in Venezuela, who took time off from rescuing our fishermen from the Guardia National, to lend presence and support to Eintou.
