“Mas in the Mas! Tyrell Learns a Lesson” is the story that Dara Healy will share with the children of the St. Dominic’s Home this week as part of a local Literary Festival. She will be accompanied by the Chibale Drumming Ensemble, comprising Ajani Healy, Shomari Healy, Kayode Charles and Ire Charles.

The story, written by Eintou Pearl Springer, tells of two children Tyrell and Keisha, a brother and sister who learn important lessons during Carnival time.

The story opens with the children’s father apologising to them for not being able to take them to see the Mas this year. He has to work, and their mother has to go the hospital to look after their grandmother. Their father tells them to stay at home, keep the door locked and not speak to any strangers until their mother returns.

Tyrell badly wants to go and see the Mas and play Pan. He convinces his sister to leave the house and go into town with him. In the city, the children encounter the Traditional Carnival and Folklore Characters who tease and follow them; the children become more and more afraid, regretting their decision to disobey their parents. A Blue Devil eventually snatches Keisha while Tyrell escapes. He has no choice but to face his family and tell them the terrible news.

In the end Keisha is brought home safe and sound and the entire family celebrates. Naturally, Tyrell and Keisha were never disobedient again!!!

The story is fun and exciting, even as it delivers important lessons and values to children and to their parents as well!
